I would speculate that some of the locomotives had been stored by their previous owners in boxes containing notorious disintegrating foam often discolored and stuck to brass surfaces. The reason that I am offering to sell three locomotives together as a set is mainly due aesthetics of multiple unit consist these units. They were sometimes referred to as baby alligators, in deference their similarity the larger rsd-15 locomotive model's from Alco.
No couplets are installed. Fortunately, most of the discoloration visible on these three locomotives does not affect surface level in a way that would show through layer or two paint after proper prep.
However, since the prototype epee nose light was mounted horizontally, it would be fairly simple to add a just above handbrake wheel if that desired for accuracy. The locomotive is not equipped for CDC operation.
The long-hood air-filter openings are properly spaced, with second and third being located closer together. All model's are in good overall condition, powered and ran backward forward together while uncoupled on a test track, at or near the same speed. No window glazing has been installed.
Locomotive c is missing the front and rear folding mu steps. I experimented with a small amount of acetone on one area and it easily removed the surface protrusions to point where felt smooth touch.
All of the model's have been stored in their original boxes fitted with a non-petroleum-based foam product during my ownership. There is, however, a good deal of surface discoloration on some the locomotives which was present when I acquired them. Note that the dark spots visible on bottom of wheel tread surfaces are not wear or slide marks. Essentially everything above the frame was removed and re-built with an 1800 hp motor a low nose.
Trucks are nicely dimension ed and detailed but have no moving or functional frame components. I did not observe any etching of the brass surfaces 3 locomotives. All of the 3 locomotives ran smoothly and responded nicely to throttle control, even at lower speeds.
Locomotive b has raised spots not etches on the frame engineers side that can be felt with ones finger. Item for sale: set of three unpainted ho gauge Alco dl RSD-12 low-nose brass model locomotives.
The prototypes were purchased by several eastern railroad lines and southern pacific in west. They are reflections of the camera. They do not appear to have been run on a layout, but likely test-run for short periods of time. If you plan to operate the model, will likely want disassemble entire drive train and clean re-lubricate it which most result in a smoother quieter operation locomotive is missing rear folding mu step.
21 units were delivered to epee in 1961 and many served until the mid-seventies or so. The drive trains are moderately noisy, but comparable to other early brass model's. It was the reason that I acquired all three for a future, but never consummated, model railroad. The similar appearing rs-11 model's have equally-spaced air filter openings.
Otherwise, all original components appear to be present as far I was able observe, although did not disassembled any of the model's.
They are quite unique and look really nice as a set. No lighting is installed.
